Hahl Master Handcrafted Guitars: The name Hahl is synonymous with superbly handcrafted, beautiful instruments. Stefan Hahl personally hand-builds every guitar that bears his name.
Each Hahl guitar is endowed with its own distinct tonal qualities, unique aesthetic personality and superb playability, all of which inspire the musician to new creative heights.
Years of closely studying traditional instrument building techniques as well as trials performed with experimental designs and painstakingly detailed tests have produced a wealth of experience and today's master built guitars.
Of course, without quality materials, an artisan, regardless of the level of skill, cannot create a quality instrument. Stefan Hahl exclusively uses carefully seasoned and aged 60-year old tone woods to create instruments with timbres that are usually only possible with older instruments.
Stefan Hahl never tires in his pursuit of the optimum solution for each musician's style, ability and aspirations. Rather than a spectacular revolution in design, it's often the small details, which appear unimportant at the first glance, that make the difference between a guitar and a master-crafted guitar. Such an approach involves an extremely time-consuming process and requires a luthier with a receptive ear, however, it is a method that produces incredible guitars, which retain their value for years to come.
Bio: Stefan Hahl was born in 1964 in Worms, one of the oldest cities in Germany. He grew up in a family of musicians and at 15 discovered his greatest love, the guitar. With time, he became inspired to create and play quality-built, superior sounding and aesthetically attractive instruments.
His first stop was the workshop of Henning Doderer, a well-known master luthier. Doderer taught Stefan Hahl the basics and opened up the doors to the fascinating world of instrument building. Stefan’s insatiable thirst for knowledge and understanding led him to closely study and test both the techniques of the old European masters and those of the modern instrument builders.
From the very beginning, he has designed his own models and proactively pursued the exchange of information with experienced colleagues and musicians. His five years of apprenticeship with prestigious guitar building companies in Germany, including Höfner, Hanika and Hopf, refined his skills and knowledge.
In 1994, Stefan Hahl completed his final examination and received his diploma from the renowned Violin and Stringed Instrument Making Academy in Mittenwald, Germany, an academy whose roots go back to the master Italian instrument builders.
For over 20 years, Stefan Hahl has devoted his creative energy to the construction and design of quality classical, dreadnought, archtop and gipsy style guitars. The outstanding sound, beauty, workmanship and playability of his instruments have won him acclaim and esteem throughout the world.
Why a custom handcrafted guitar? Eventually, every guitarist comes to the realization that a mass-produced instrument no longer satisfies increasing artistic and technical demands. To continue making progress, guitarists require instruments that inspire and challenge them to reach new levels of creativity and technical skill. At this point, only an instrument that is custom made to match the musician's specific personality can satisfy the individual's inner creative spirit!
Being a passionate guitarist, Stefan Hahl understands the relationships guitarists have with their guitars. Years of working closely together with musicians to design and build custom guitars have honed his skills and ability to meet the needs of guitarists. He personally builds every instrument that leaves his shop. Over the years, his formula of German attention to detail, artistic creativity and close collaboration with guitarists has produced countless ideal pairings of guitars and guitarists.
“Lutherie is much more for me than just a craft or a job. It is my passion, a passion fed by my love of music and guitar playing. What would the world be without music and life without the many hours of pleasure it gives us? The joy that music and music making provide is the all-consuming force that inspires me to create instruments.” - Stefan Hahl
"My greatest thrill is seeing the joy musicians experience upon finally finding the instrument that enables them to realize their untapped creative potential." - Stefan Hahl
Hahl Bireli LaGrene
After having played Selmer-Maccaferri style guitars built exclusively by Stefan Hahl for many years, Biréli Lagrène asked Stefan if he would build a signature model guitar for him. Stefan was glad to oblige and created the Biréli Lagrène Signature guitar, built according to Biréli’s specifications and wishes and, of course, with the finest materials.
This guitar has a real premium look about it, and an incredibly unique voice. Bireli Lagrene has played a Gitano Super De Luxe since 2003. In fact, he is so impressed by it that it's the only guitar he uses for acoustic performances, alternating between the D and oval soundhole models. Here's what he has to say about the Gitano Super de Luxe instruments: "Like choice wines, these guitars get better with each day that passes."
The classic jazz guitar sound is achieved by means of the floating humbucker installed at the end of the neck. A second, ceramic pickup mounted in the bridge via a special technique adds an extremely pure, cutting, yet warm and acoustic component. Both pickups adjust individually and can be blended together for a diverse selection of sound character options, from warm and jazzy to brilliant and acoustic.
