Koll RE7F

YOU ARE VIEWING A SALES ARCHIVE ENTRY - THIS GUITAR HAS BEEN SOLD. IT IS POSTED HERE AS AN EXAMPLE OF PAST SALES. PLEASE CHECK THE "NEW ARRIVALS" SECTION FOR INSTRUMENTS THAT ARE IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE.

Now here's one you don't see everyday, a Novax fanned fret ergonomically correct 7 string and the 300th guitar built by Saul Koll. Saul wanted this to be a special guitar and we know it doesn't take much to get his imagination going and ...oh well, you look and tell me...

The RE7F is an asymmetrical, ergonomically designed, carved top, headless wonder. The original was made for Ron Eschete. He had played a Klein electric owned by one of his students. He loved the neck angle and how it sat on his leg. He wanted Saul Koll to make him something like it, only in a 7 string. At this time he was playing large traditional arch tops. While designing this guitar for him, Koll borrowed from each. As comfortable and great sounding as this instrument is, it remains somewhat an enigma, with only the most daring and brave playing it. It is probably the most comfortable Koll to play. It is primarily built as an electric guitar but has great acoustics, not unlike a small archtop (which it is!). Each RE, more so than any guitar that Koll makes, is ground up custom made. Koll experiments with every aspect each time (bracing, scale length, body depth, electronics, tuning, etc.).

The RE7F:

  • Novax fan fretboard, ebony. 24.635 on treble, 26" bass. 8th fret is perpendicular/standard.
  • Medium #141 frets.
  • Fingerboard radius is approximately 12", slight compounding to flatten as it goes up.
  • Nut is unbleached bone.
  • Neck is aged Honduran mahogany.
  • Body, while it looks unusual is constructed like a typical arch top guitar.
  • Carved Sitka top.
  • Carved maple back & handbent sides.
  • For the pickup, Saul was going for a very clear and articulate voice, not unlike the old DeArmond Monkey on a stick pickups. He found an alnico lipstick not only had the voice he wanted, but also was wide enough for the 7 string spacing. Beautiful clear and present tone.
  • Locking sperzels.
  • Currently set up with 6 flats, light gauge, and a round wound 7th. (A trick Saul learned from Ron Eschete, note: "RE")
  • Custom made Maxline flight case.
  • This instrument is the final one completed in 2007, and Saul Koll's three hundredth guitar.

Price $5750

There will be no more like this for quite some time.
