| | ~ Monty Guitars ~ Brian Monty started out as a guitar player and has continued as a guitar player who makes guitars. After forty-five years of playing and holding guitars, Monty knows what one should feel like in the hands of the player. What has always fascinated him has been the sound generated by the fashioning of the wood itself, those first notes as the guitar is strung up to tension. To Brian Monty, a guitar is a musical instrument that is meant to be played, not to be purchased and then confined to a vault. With this in mind, he fashions guitars that feel, sound and play like you have had it for thirty years.
Monty likes to say that he transfers some of his soul into each instrument as he is sanding it. Anyone who has made a guitar from scratch will understand this. With each guitar, particular attention and care is given to the fitting of the neck to the body. Without this, the guitar will only be half alive. Everything to do with the body and neck is hand-made. There is no "jobbing out" of the necks or any other part of the guitar. There is no CNC machining. All is done the old fashioned way: elbow grease. The necks are hand-sanded and shaped to conform to that certain "feel." The truss rods are made by hand in the shop, as are the truss rod nuts. The guitars are sprayed with traditional nitro lacquer or with a musical instrument lacquer that has a little more flex in it so as to keep cracking at a minimum. Again, the spraying is all done in the shop and not "jobbed out." All stains and colours are custom mixed to suit the individual shades and tones within the different woods, so that each guitar is unique, as they become Monty's own "canvas" or "painting." The bridge and tailpiece are nickel-plated or gold, depending on the client. The pots are linear-taper, the input jack and selector switch are Switchcraft and the tuning machines are Grover unless otherwise specified by the client. Once the guitar is strung up, it is played for a few days and is left to "settle in." All guitars come with a hard-shell case. | |
