 ~ Phaez Amps ~

Randy Fay started developing audio gear back around 1990. In the beginning, he focused on a range of hi-fi audiophile tube gear and custom speakers, but over the years his focus narrowed to the development of custom guitar amps with an emphasis on overall sound quality. For Randy, the designing and building of high end audio gear means developing the ability to perceive in an in-depth fashion how small circuit changes affect sound.

Randy Fay, long time researcher of famous tube amps
The Phaez name is a conjoiner of Randy's last name, Fay, and the audio term, phase. It is an attempt to illustrate Randy's thirst for intimately knowing and understanding the intricate details of his favorite tube amps, among them the Marshalls (Superlead, Superbass, Plexi, JTM45, 2203/2204, 2061X & 1974X), the Fender Blackface amps (Twin, Showman, Deluxe Reverb), and the Fender Tweeds (Champ, Deluxe, & Princeton). Some other favorites include the Dumble HRM and Non-HRM, the Komet 60, the Soldano SLO100, the Vox AC15, the Matchless Lightning and Spitfire, the Hotcat 30, the Bogner Extacy and Shiva, The Naylor Superdrive 60, the Orange Tiny Terror, the Electroplex Rocket, the Roccaforte HG100, and the Komet 60. Randy's research was undertaken in order to understand what really makes those amps sound the way they do, with specific attention paid to how each circuit is designed and how it works.

Randy's has been an obsession with sound quality and how it serves the music. His Daisycutter circuit is the sum of his knowledge encapsulated in a high gain guitar amp. This innovative circuit was designed to mimic the sound desired by the Brown Sound camp combined with the ability to clean up the guitar.

The goal
The goal for the Phaez amp is to able to communicate the subtle musical nuance expressed by the musician. That is what makes music interesting. If you dig in hard, the amp HAS TO respond. If you back off JUST SLIGHTLY, again, the amp HAS TO present that subtle dynamic shade. There is a feedback mechanism involved and the better the amp provides information back to the player, the better the player can adapt his/her technique to present a specific musical idea.

Purity of the signal path
So how is this "touch response" attained? It is Randy's opinion that there are many, many items that contribute to touch response when designing and building an amp, but other than how the circuit operates, it is the PURITY OF THE SIGNAL PATH that has the most influence on the 'directness' of an amplifier. Phaez amps are designed and built with strict attention to the purity of the signal path.

Phaez amps have made their way across the globe with sales to Venezuela, Norway, Finland, France, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia, United Kingdom, Greece, Russia and many sales all over Canada and the United States. Still waiting for that sale to CHINA though! Maybe you'd like to buy one and then go perform in Shanghai!
