DESCRIPTION:
In the words of Saul Koll: "I’ve had this intense grain bigleaf maple block hanging around the shop for almost 20 years. I was saving it for something special. I thought I’d make a pair of Glide models with it, one carved top Super Glide and one flat top Duo Glide, and offer them as a matched pair. I processed the wood into the top blanks for this project and that’s where they stayed for years.
"Last year I was honored to be invited to the Montreal Guitar Show. I accepted and began planning for what I would display. This show is at the highest level and many of the best luthiers on the planet show their new work here. I needed something interesting to show and remembered that old maple.
"It was decided to build one guitar from it, using the original piece I had slated for the top, and using the matching flat top as a back. So in effect, this guitar has two show piece tops!
"The sides were bent into shape (rather than sawn), as in a traditional arch top guitar, a figured maple neck was built with rosewood pinstripes. Rather than using the celluloid or ABS bindings of my normal Glide models, I decided to use solid ebony bindings. Also, following this ebony motif, an unadorned ebony fingerboard was made and fretted with stainless steel frets. With the super thin gloss finish, and these frets, the neck feels slippery and fast.
"The guitar is hollow body built just as I do my jazz boxes. I used a “trestle” bracing system which couples the top and back and provides ample support and rigidity for feedback control. An original USA Bigsby B-3 vibrato was fitted. Three Vintage Vibe CC pickups are controlled with two simple toggles. With these, you can get any pickup combination. As is my normal “less is more” philosophy, I went with a simple master tone and master volume, using high grade CTS pots. David King made the knobs and switch tips for this instrument.
"A custom fitted Cedar Creek hardshell case completes the package. I wanted to present my finest work for the Montreal Guitar Show and this guitar represents that. For me it has done its job and very well, now it needs to find a good home."
