Straub Twisted Triode The TWISTED TRIODE is packed full of some of the thickest and creamiest crunchy rhythm to full on screaming lead guitar tones to be found. It is not Tweed nor Vox or Marshall and is neither 6V6, 6L6, EL84 or EL34. You will hear all those sonic footprints, but the Twisted Triode's tones are deeper, thicker and richer than those of your typical EL84 or EL34 amps and yet more raucous than those of your typical 6V6 and 6L6 amps. Tones reminiscent of the very best of ZZ Top, EVH , Zeppelin and other classics can easily be accessed, and done so with more depth and gain on tap if you prefer. In the non boost mode, the Twisted Triode delivers big bold punchy semi-clean to crunchy tones reminiscent of the finest Tweed amps of the early to mid 50's. In the boost mode, this amp delivers a huge thick creamy overdrive, crushing it's competition, with just the right balance of compression and punchy articulation. There is a tremendous amount of additional gain on tap and by simply slipping a 12AX7 in the number 1 slot and dropping the mid control, you can dish out a fairly healthy dose of nu-metal mayhem if that is your desire. Like it's bigger brother the Cantus, the interplay between the master and volume is like that of an internally jumpered 4 input normal / bright input section with the master controlling the darker more articulate sounds and the volume controlling the brighter distortion. The sweet spot in both the non-boost and boosted modes sits right about at 1 O'clock. You can take the master down for some fun bedroom volume playing especially in the boost mode where you can retain a great deal of overdrive with the master down and volume up above 1 O'clock. There are no pristine sparkling clean sounds to be had from this amp. You must think in terms of tweed like punchy clean to crunchy rhythm sounds morphing into thick screaming over the top lead tones all easily controlled from your guitars volume. If that is your preference, than this is your amp. Also, please don't let the 12 watt rating fool you either, as the Twisted Triode can be dialed down for home and club use but can also hang with most any 50 watter out there once you open her up. In more technical terms, the Twisted Triode is a 12 Watt amp based on an old school true triode power tube that provides a very linear response and sounds wonderful in audio circuits. Most amp companies have overlooked this tube because its old design is inefficient and very hard to drive, but it is those factors that actually make it perfect for a low wattage design. It allows them to be driven at optimum power levels and lets them sing at comfortable home listening levels. The best news is that these tubes are still made by all of the large tube manufactures, so the prices are reasonable and they are easily available. The TWISTED TRIODE is a 0 NEGATIVE FEEDBACK design, giving the amp a wide open sound. These factors along with the tried and true Cantus preamp section with master volume and boost (gain) switch let you go from beautiful cleans to hard driving overdrive and everything in between. With the master volume it is perfect for at home, in the studio or turn it up for small club gigs. Like all of Straub amps, this is a hand-wired, turret board constructed amp in a thick anodized aluminum chassis and is housed in a dovetailed solid Sapele Mahogany cabinet.
