The Spirit of the Wind handmade electric guitar was designed with a one-guitar, less-is-more philosophy in mind. It was created for those who are looking for the beautiful tone of a traditional p-90 pickup with a higher output than the classic lipstick pickups of Tone Revival's Thunder Child guitar, with plenty of bottom end, while maintaining the unique bell-like signature tone of Tone Revival instruments. This guitar was made to become your lifelong companion and to be the final solution to endless guitar hoarding (the obsessive acquisition of an endless number of not-quite-great guitars).
Tone Revival's less-is-more approach to guitar design is to some degree a reaction to the belief that old instruments sounds better. In reality, it was the way classic tracks were produced and these instruments were recorded that made them sound great, not to mention that a cumbersome battery of tone-obscuring effects was rarely used. The Spirit of the Wind guitar was designed first and foremost to be a guitar that will sound superior with just one small amp. No enhancements, EQ, expensive mics, preamps, etc. - a guitar that will shine with standard equipment. The focus is on the real thing that makes instruments great.
Thinking beyond solid body guitars, the folks at Tone Revival were looking for an added acoustic tone - something that will reflect the total construction and materials of the instrument. Though the sound in an electric guitar is produced by an interference in the pickup's magnetic field some of the acoustic qualities of the instrument will influence the way the string vibrates. That is why all of Tone Revival's guitars are always hollow body or semi-hollow body instruments. They choose super lightweight aged Mediterranean pine with a thin top for that purpose. The top itself is similar to an acoustic guitar and even has braces. One of the reasons that guitar manufacturers don't use pine despite its super light weight and great tone is the difficulties in the mass-produced routing process. This gives a small boutique workshop like Tone Revival an advantage. And compared to rare and heavily regulated tonewoods pine is eco and international border-friendly.
Instead of the usual thick shiny finish coat all the unnecessary wood filler and lacquer was discarded and replaced with Tone Revival's "wind erosion" finish. The wood grain is exposed and then heavily oxidized and finished with a thin layer of natural shellac/french polish. That way, the natural look and feel of the wood is preserved and kept as light and responsive as possible.
Tone Revival's method of oxidizing the handmade brass parts was influenced by the Japanese Wabi Sabi technique. The term itself is difficult to translate, but in general it relates to the beauty that exists in nature and the aesthetics of random imperfection. Oxidization of the brass parts is promoted in order to bring out the beauty of random imperfections in the patina.
The pickups that were chosen for this instrument are Bare Knuckle's Half Note P90s, which are handmade for Tone Revival in the UK, and were designed to complement the natural tone of the guitar. The Half Note 90s are vintage output P90 single coils voiced primarily for players who want a fat, single coil tone with a wide dynamic range that follows their playing technique. The mid-range is broad and solid, each note carrying plenty of weight with exceptional harmonic detail and clarity. Low notes maintain a piano-like chime while high notes are fat and ring out, almost with an acoustic quality. These pickups were chosen for the Spirit of the Wind custom guitar due to their capability of capturing the beautiful bell-like, almost acoustic tone of the guitar.
