It all goes back to Al's original napkin sketch of the signature 4G body style: The lower bout was larger, but the bridge was positioned further back, taking maximum vibrational advantage of the larger surface area, while at the same time effectively moving the neck and headstock closer to the player.
The end result is a guitar that actually feels more comfortable to play than a small-body, but has more sonic projection and complex tonality than an uncomfortably portly axe. It's Al-chemy, dude!

The 7E (15" lower bout) and the 7D (15.75" lower bout) are true archtop semi acoustic guitars. The top is a hand-carved archtop, parallel braced and supporting only the bridge. There is a solid center-block that the pickups and tailpiece mount into and through, so the top plate is free to move with the strings vibrations...
The 7G, 7JKS, and 7M chambered solidbody electrics are all based on classic electrics - the Gretsch Duo-Jet (7G), the Rickenbacker (7JKS) and the Offset (7M). The bodies are made from reclaimed espave - the mahogany-like wild cashew wood of Panama...
