Cybil is Ponce's version of the best playing and feeling S-style guitar available today.
Based on a '57 S-style body Mike Ponce starts off with a dried, and pre-weighed two-piece alder solid body. Hand stamped in every body multiple times are the serial numbers and color code to insure that the body and neck never get separated in the paint or building process. Ponce hand sands each Cybil adding a hand relief on every heel to allow for full access of the fingerboard. Each body get a total of 3 coats of conductive shielding paint in the cavities, (one coat before paint and 2 after paint) to ensure grounding. Ponce's nitrocellulose finish is as thin as possible to ensure the natural sound and weight of the instrument. All Cybil models are aged.
Based on the late sixties "big pegs" Ponce starts with a thicker headstock, allowing for more tonal transfer from the neck to the bridge. Ponce uses legally harvested Indian rosewood fingerboards with a 10" - 14" radius, hand selected flat sawn eastern maple properly dried to 7% to insure stability. Ponce necks are 1.650" (1 5/8") at the nut and 2.250" wide at the heel which is .050" wider than most S-style necks. The neck shape is a perfect medium C with a thickness of .830" at the first fret and .920" at the twelfth. The wider neck allows for the extra roll of the fingerboard giving a perfect C feel without losing any fret surface. The frets are medium stainless steel which Ponce hand shapes on every edge. Every Cybil includes an unbleached bone nut which has a natural lubrication from the oil in the bone yet a really nice bright sound. The single head adjustable truss rod uses a more stable 3/16" hex wrench. Every neck includes a matched color headstock. Ponce's finish is all nitrocellulose lacquer from the sealer coats to the final coats and will continue to age, and fade as time goes on.
The Ponce vintage single coils were developed from years of experimenting with different versions of alnico magnets and wire types, gauges and coatings. Ponce came up with a simulated hand wound fat 50s look alike - full of mids and highs when needed. The Ponce Single Slug humbucker is a perfect match with the single coils. Allowing for chunky mids and also high gain, these humbuckers also clean up very well when needed for blues or rock. Ponce only uses CTS pots and Pure Tone jacks.
